Bawe Island, Zanzibar
Overview
Just a 10-15 minute speedboat transfer from Stone Town, this spectacular private island retreat opened in June 2024 as the first and only “one island, one resort” experience in Africa. Located within the newly established Changuu-Bawe Marine Reserve, Bawe was once known as Telegraph Island – part of the colonial-era underwater cable link connecting Zanzibar to the rest of the world. Today, it has been transformed into a sanctuary of barefoot luxury, harmony, and exclusivity.
Spanning 30 hectares, Bawe offers 70 spacious villas discreetly scattered along powdery beaches and within tropical foliage. Each villa includes a private pool, daily butler service, and panoramic sea views. The design blends Italian elegance with Swahili craftsmanship, creating calming interiors where soft colour palettes and natural textures mirror the island’s surroundings.
Sustainability is central to Bawe’s identity. Powered by solar energy and equipped with its own desalination system, the resort is self-sufficient and eco-conscious. Guests can explore coral conservation projects, visit neighbouring Prison Island for a glimpse into Zanzibar’s past, or unwind with tailored wellness programmes in a truly untouched setting.
