Hotel Carlota, Ecuador
Overview
Positioned in Quito’s UNESCO‑listed historic centre, Hotel Carlota occupies the elegant 1905 mansion of Doña Carlota Echeverría de Moreno, just steps from Plaza San Marcos. Carefully restored, the property retains over 90 % of its original woodwork and terrazzo tiles, while its contemporary redesign by VIVA Arquitectura incorporates reclaimed materials, solar panels, and water‑conservation systems – perfectly aligning heritage with sustainability.
With just twelve guest rooms, Hotel Carlota offers an intimate experience rooted in Quito’s artistic revival. Each room is uniquely designed with a mix of locally sourced antiques and bespoke furniture made from recycled wood. Skylit bathrooms and private Juliet balconies frame city views, while public spaces – including a rooftop bar, salon library, and gallery‑style lobby – are designed to host cultural events, readings, and design installations.
Carlota became Ecuador’s first certified B Corporation hotel, making community and ecology a core part of its DNA. Its on‑site Bistro serves seasonal Ecuadorian cuisine, sourced from local producers; the spa uses organic Andean botanicals; and the hotel regularly opens its doors to neighbourhood initiatives, architecture salons, and pop‑ups. For savvy, design‑minded travelers, Carlota is as much city laboratory as boutique hotel.
