When to Visit Sri Lanka

A Month-by-Month Guide
Sri Lanka is a true year-round holiday destination, blessed with sunshine in one region or another throughout the year. Its two distinct monsoon systems mean that while one coast experiences rainfall, the other enjoys bright, dry days – making it possible to plan a Sri Lanka holiday in any month. Whether you’re drawn to calm seas and golden beaches, cool hill-country mornings, or wildlife-rich safaris, the island offers the perfect conditions somewhere, whatever the season.
Choosing Your Perfect Time to Go
- For beaches: West and south coasts (Dec–Apr), east coast (May–Sep)
- For wildlife: Yala and Udawalawe (Feb–Aug), Wilpattu (May–Sep)
- For festivals: April (New Year), July–August (Esala Perahera)
- For all-round touring: March–April and August–September
Seasons at a Glance
The island’s tropical climate is shaped by two primary monsoons:
- The south-west monsoon (May to September) brings rain to the south and west coasts and the central hills.
- The north-east monsoon (October to January) affects the north and east coasts.
Between these systems lie short “inter-monsoon” periods with warm days and brief evening showers – a great time to explore the entire country.
