Dining in Italy comes with a few customs to know. Most restaurants add a coperto (cover charge) per person, which covers bread and table settings. Some also add a servizio (service charge), particularly in tourist areas. Neither is a tip. Tipping isn’t obligatory, but it is appreciated. Rounding up the bill or leaving around 5-10% for excellent service is considered polite.
It’s also worth knowing that mealtimes are a cultural experience in Italy. Lunch is often served between 12:30 and 2:30pm, while dinner can start later than in the UK, with many locals dining after 8pm. Taking your time to enjoy multiple courses – antipasti, primi, secondi, and dolci— – s part of the pleasure.
