Frequently asked questions
Sri Lanka has two distinct monsoon seasons, which means the best time to visit depends on where you’re heading. The south and west coasts, along with the Cultural Triangle, are at their best between December and April, with warm, dry weather and calm seas. The east coast enjoys its sunshine season from May to September. Hill-country destinations like Nuwara Eliya and Ella are cooler year-round, making them refreshing escapes from the tropical heat.
Sri Lanka is a country of remarkable contrasts, offering a mix of culture, adventure, and relaxation. The Cultural Triangle is a natural starting point, where you can explore the UNESCO-listed cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, marvel at the golden cave temples of Dambulla, and climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress for panoramic views. In Kandy, the revered Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a spiritual centrepiece, while the train journey from Kandy to Ella through mist-cloaked tea plantations is one of the most scenic rail rides in the world.
For wildlife enthusiasts, Yala National Park is renowned for its leopard population, while Udawalawe offers almost guaranteed elephant sightings. Wilpattu and Minneriya are equally rewarding, especially during “The Gathering,” when hundreds of elephants congregate near the Minneriya reservoir. Off the coast, Mirissa is a world-class destination for spotting blue whales and dolphins.
On the southern and eastern coastlines, golden beaches invite relaxation, surfing, and snorkelling. Galle Fort offers a rich blend of Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonial history, with cobbled streets lined with boutique hotels and cafés. Inland, the Knuckles Mountain Range and Sinharaja Rainforest provide excellent hiking and birdwatching, while experiences such as visiting a working tea estate, joining a cooking class, or staying in a boutique villa or heritage hotel allow travellers to connect with Sri Lanka’s warm hospitality and everyday life.
Most visitors need to apply online for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling to Sri Lanka. A valid passport with at least six months’ validity is required. It’s advisable to check the latest health and safety updates from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office before departure. Local SIM cards are inexpensive and useful for navigation and communication. Respecting cultural customs is important – when visiting temples, dress modestly, remove shoes, and avoid public displays of affection.
The most comfortable and flexible option is to hire a private car with a dedicated chauffeur-guide. Roads can be slow-moving, but a private driver ensures a relaxed pace and expert local knowledge. For longer journeys, domestic flights and the rail network are also available – train rides such as Kandy to Ella are particularly scenic and worth including. In major towns and coastal areas, tuk-tuks are a fun and convenient way to cover shorter distances.
